CONNECT MORE with Cable Matters® USB-C™ Docking Stations

Why is USB C the future?

Ultra-slim laptops and smartphones are shipping with USB-C. These thin form factor devices force users to connect to the Internet, add external video and a keyboard, transfer files and charge their device over one or two USB-C ports.

USB-C technology uses a compact and reversible, 24-pin connector with support for data transfer and charging. It incorporates alternate modes to carry non-USB signals. DP Alt Mode must be supported on the USB C port of a smartphone or computer to view video over USB C.

What docking station do I need?

  • Check your device specifications for video over USB support
  • Check your display for spare HDMI®, or DisplayPort™ ports
  • Do you need to charge your device through the docking station? How many watts does your device need?
  • Cable Matters offers a selection for USB C Docking Stations for a laptop or smartphone with video, data, networking and charging.

Can USB C support two monitors?

Many laptop models support two external monitors. Check the specifications of your device to verify that it can support dual monitors over USB-C.

Cable Matters offers two docking station models:

  • USB C Docking Station with Dual 4K DisplayPort
  • USB C Docking Station with Dual 4K HDMI
  •

    Can USB C support 4K?

The maximum video resolution of a USB-C dock is determined by:

  • Video resolution output of the smartphone or computer
  • Video resolution supported by the connected display
  • Type of display interface technology that supports 4K (HDMI and DisplayPort)
  • Available bandwidth of the USB C port on the computer (5Gbps, 10Gbps)
  • The USB-C Docking Station from Cable Matters supports a unique bandwidth allocation feature for a USB-C 5Gbps or 10Gbps port. A selectable switch on the dock allocates the bandwidth for video and data transfer functions. Users can dynamically configure the bandwidth to accommodate a choice of these features:

  • Dual HD with Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 data transfer speed
  •      OR

  • Dual 4K video with Fast Ethernet and USB 2.0 data transfer speed
  •

Can a docking station charge a laptop with USB C Power Delivery? (PD)

The USB-IF organization specifies power profiles for safely powering and charging a smartphone, laptop, monitor or other equipment. Safely power and charge a device from 7.5 to 100 watts over USB C.

Cable Matters offers 60W and 80W USB C Docking Stations.

Are USB C and Thunderbolt 3 compatible?

Thunderbolt™ 3 uses the same reversible USB C connector for data, video and charging. Thunderbolt 3 ports can support 20Gbps or 40Gbps. A USB-C port supports a maximum data transfer rate of 5Gbps or 10Gbps (Gen2).

Most USB-C docking stations are compatible with a Thunderbolt computer. Thunderbolt devices are NOT compatible with a USB C computer. Some models of Cable Matters USB C docking stations are limited to a single display with Mac® computers.
