Connect More with Cable Matters USB-C HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, and VGA Video Cables

CONNECT MORE with Cable Matters® USB-C™ Video Cables

Can USB C carry video?

USB-C technology incorporates alternate modes to carry non-USB signals. DP Alt Mode must be supported on the USB C port of a smartphone, tablet or computer to view video over USB C. Depending on your equipment, a USB C port can support transferring files, charging, connecting to the Internet or adding an external video display.

Cable Matters offers a wide variety of USB C for video cables including:

  • USB C to HDMI®
  • USB C to DVI
  • USB C to VGA
  • USB C to DisplayPort™
  • USB C to Mini DisplayPort
  •

    Can USB C support 4K?

The maximum video resolution carried over a USB-C video cable is determined by:

  • Video resolution output of the smartphone or computer
  • Video resolution supported by the connected display
  • Type of display interface technology that supports 4K (HDMI and DisplayPort)
  • Cable Matters offers USB C with HDMI and USB C with DisplayPort cables that support 4K.

    Can USB C output 144Hz?

The video refresh rate (or frame rate) determines how many times a second a picture is re-painted. 60Hz (60 fps) is a common refresh rate for a 4K UHD TV. A high refresh rate such as 144Hz is important for displaying a clear picture with live-action gaming.

Our popular Cable Matters USB C to DisplayPort Cable supports 1440p@144Hz with compatible equipment.

Do I need a USB C cable or adapter?

A USB C video cable is a good choice for a permanent connection at the home or office. A USB C video adapter offers the flexibility of connecting to any display with an existing video cable of any length.

Can USB C power a monitor?

A USB C cable can carry up to 100 watts of power. A USB powered monitor can be directly connected to a host computer for both power and video. Cable Matters offers a USB C to USB C Gen 2 Cable that supports 4K video, a data transfer rate up to 10Gbps, and 100 watts of power delivery.

What is USB-C Power Delivery? (PD)

The USB-IF organization specifies power profiles for safely powering and charging a smartphone, laptop, monitor or other equipment. Safely power and charge a device from 7.5 to 100 watts over USB C.

Cable Matters offers a USB C to DisplayPort Cable with 60W Power Delivery and a USB C to HDMI Cable with 60W Power Delivery.

Are USB C and Thunderbolt 3 the same thing?

Thunderbolt™ 3 uses the same reversible USB C connector for data, video and charging. Thunderbolt cables use USB C with a lightning symbol. Most USB-C cables are compatible with a Thunderbolt computer. Thunderbolt devices are NOT compatible with a USB C computer. All Cable Matters USB C video cables are Thunderbolt 3 port compatible with Windows® or Mac® computers.
